A day in the life of a dog would be nothing to complain about. Who wouldn’t want to be able to play and sleep all day long? What a life! But have you ever wondered exactly what a typical day of play and sleep should look like for your dog?
Look no further – we’ve broken it all down to the very last detail.
Most people are surprised to find out that dogs spend around 50%, or twelve to fourteen hours, of their day sleeping. Dogs have an irregular sleep regime and need much more rest than we do. And even after sleeping most of the day, they often spend another 30%, or around five hours, of the day lounging around. When dogs don’t get the downtime they need, they can become cranky. This is why Fitdog has a daily schedule that includes breaks throughout the day including a mandatory puppy break – because puppies need even more sleep!
Despite all of this downtime, it’s important to make sure your dog has a sufficient amount of activity. Physical activity helps to stimulate your pup both physically and mentally. Keeping your dog active can be as simple as a walk around the neighborhood or socializing with friends.
However, most breeds need at least 1-hour of high-intensity activity, like jogging, playing fetch or hiking – sort of like how we go to the gym.
Understanding your dogs sleep and activity schedule will help you plan your own day accordingly and ensure your dog gets the proper amount of each – keeping them healthy and happy – the ultimate goal!
