Despite the sunny weather we’re used to in Southern California, having a snow day with your dog is less than a day’s drive away. If you and your dog are missing the snow, take a trip to any of these SoCal snow spots to enjoy some winter vibes!

Big Bear Lake

Nestled in the San Bernadino mountains at 7000′, Big Bear Lake is one of the most popular winter destinations for southwestern snow bunnies. Big Bear is usually your best shot at seeing snow in Southern California, and luckily, this destination is very dog-friendly. Big Bear Lake gets most of their snow between December and March, making that your ideal time frame for a winter getaway!

Mt. Baldy

Mt. Baldy was the location of the first-ever Fitdog snow day. While we could see the snow at the mountain’s peak, there was no snow in the area we were in. Nonetheless, Mt. Baldy does get a couple of inches of snow on average every year between January and March. So if you’re lucky, you can go right after a snowfall and see some flurries. Although we were expecting snow at Mt. Baldy, the dogs still had a blast exploring the trail and playing in the rushing stream.

Lake Arrowhead

Lake Arrowhead is about 30 miles west of Big Bear Lake. This SoCal destination has lots of dog-friendly trails and lodging options for a snowy mountain getaway. The snow is pretty unpredictable in Lake Arrowhead, but if you can time it so you go right after a snowfall, you may be able to see some snow on the trails.

Idyllwild

Idyllwild is a mountain town 120 miles southeast of Los Angeles. This town has many pet-friendly trails, lodging options, and restaurants. They experience most of their snow in January and February, so going around that time will likely guarantee snow. Idyllwild is a great destination for a weekend away from the city with your best friend!

Lake Tahoe, CA

Lake Tahoe isn’t technically in Southern California. But, if you’re down to take a bit further of a journey, Lake Tahoe is a literal winter wonderland. Dogs can join their owners in cross-country skiing, hiking a trail, enjoying the beaches, or chilling out at a craft brewery. Lake Tahoe averages about 400″ of snow every year, so it’s a great place to consider planning a pet-friendly winter vacation or gathering.

In Southern California, getting to the snow right after it falls is your best shot at having a real snow day with your dog. Keep an eye on weather conditions to see if you can plan a snow day for you and your best friend!
