Throughout history, dogs have been known to assist humans in all different ways. There seems to be no job that a dog can’t handle! After just celebrating Labor Day weekend, we wanted you to meet some very bright and determined dogs.
Occupation: White House Ambassador Dog
With schedules to compete with President Obama, Bo, the White House dog, has become the White House Ambassador for the past six years. Bo started as a key supporter of the 2008 campaign. Shortly after becoming the family pet, Bo had his first job in the White House a helper to the White House groundskeeper, Dale Haney. Now, Bo receives many requests for a variety of appearances alongside Michelle and Barak Obama.
Occupation: The Littlest Bookseller
Gizzy is the littlest bookseller at Strand Book Store, NYC. She goes to work each day at one of New York’s iconic bookstores. From rare books to signings events, there is always something exciting with 18 miles of books!
Occupation: Service Dog
Friendly is one of many service dogs who work with the nonprofit, Freedom Service Dogs. Pups are trained to help military veterans, children with autism and people with mobility disabilities to handle life tasks which enable them to regain their independence. Some dogs, like Friendly, can even open doors and do laundry.
Occupation: Truffle Hunter
Zoe is aiding foodies everywhere by searching for black truffles. Truffles are one of the world’s most delicate and expensive luxuries. They are often associated with pigs, but in recent years, dogs have become a more popular choice because they have a higher stamina and are easier to train. It’s become especially popular in Oregon, where Zoe lives and leads group truffle hunts.
Occupation: Librarian Therapy Dog
Gizmo, a part of the Hartford Public Library staff, is a “Paws for Friendship”-certified therapy dog and “Paws to Read”-certified assisted reading dog. Gizmo spends his hours listening to youth practice their reading. Gizmo encourages a positive environment by listening to readers read in a non-judgmental environment. Gizmo loves listening to readers of all reading levels!!
These hardworking and studious canines are superstars in our communities! It’s safe to say because of pups like them, humans aren’t the only ones who hopefully were recognized this Labor Day!
